6th Grade Highlights
The 6th grade has a 1:1 technology program, putting iPads into the hands of each student in conjunction with the existing classroom SmartBoard and weekly visits to the computer lab. Students actively work on integrating this technology to enrich and extend the existing curriculum. They learn to research, publish, and organize themselves in new ways in addition to reinforcing many necessary skills. Sixth Grade participates in field trips, including Ancient Egypt at the Museum of Man, and Birch/Scripps Institution for an investigation of pate tectonics. In the spring, students attend Astrocamp, a three day camp which emphasizes physical science, astronomy, and the exploration of of the universe through innovative, interactive exercises. With Walk through the Ancient Times, students discover Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome in an imaginary tour of the ancient civilizations. Students broaden their understanding of these cultures with role playing, maps, timelines, and games. Sixth Grade mathematics introduces equations and combines various math concepts to solve multi-step word problems. They learn integer rules through board games, manipulate fractions through recipes, discover polygons through objects in their house, and engage in linear functions through coordinate plane battleship.
